Question
Hi
I'm planning to use a Danish teak cabinet(1960's) as a vanity in my bathroom but need a way to protect the finish from water damage. How do I get a "natural" (no high gloss) finish and keep it looking good?
Any info and advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Answer
Hi Kristen
Nice to hear from you.
There is no need for high gloss as a satin finish will protect the wood just as well as high gloss.
I would apply a good satin finish poly.
As with any finish Kristen, it wears over time.
No finish lasts forever, and in this application it will wear faster so keep an eye on it over time.
Its when the finish breaks down and water gets into the wood that you will have problems.
This need not happen if you are careful and never let the finish reach that stage...simply apply more over time as needed.
Great question
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
