Question
hopefully you can help me out...My fiancee has mentioned to  me that he would like to get into wood working. He has told me about how he wouldn't mind having a wood lathe and well i thought that maybe i could buy him one either for his birthday or christmas....BUT...i have NO idea what is a good wood lathe, what the brands are, etc. I know nothing. I don't think he is quite sure what he wants either...otherwise i would just ask him. As far as i know he hasn't had much expierance with wood working, but he is one of those guys that pick up on things very quickly...
we don't have a very big garage (where he would keep it), but i know he wants to use the lathe to make things for our future house (table legs, etc), so it needs to be a durable, longlasting lathe. So i am hoping you can give me some advice on what would be a good (prefferably used)lathe to get for him and what the cost of it would be...where i could find one...any help on this would be great as i am completly clueless.

check this site out to see what a lathe looks like.  this is a cast iron full size delta wood lathe.  forget what I said about the chuck, wrong technical terminology. Is called a face plate. also if getting used, make sure it has a tool rest.  He will also need a face sheild, but you should let him pick that out as it needs to be comfortable on him.
