Question
My aunt and Uncle purchased an antique bedroom set for my 3 year old daughter. It is a beautiful 40 year old set, but way too dark. I would like to make it a lighter color.I have never done this before. I am not sure if stripping, sanding or what is involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you!

Answer
Hi Laura
Nice to hear from you.
Well first off, the set is a long way from being classed as antique. I'm a lot older than the set LOL.
Having said that it will be very well made I bet.
Before you attempt stripping, I suggest you try a test spot in an area that will not show.
You must determine if the finish can be removed with paint stripper.
Then you must look carefully at the woods color after that.
If the wood is still dark, you have little hope of going lighter. Sanding will ruin the set so forget sanding.
If the wood is as light as you desire, then your in good shape to proceed with a complete strip and refinish of the entire set.
A huge job by the way, so the test must be done.
Get back to me if needed.
Hope this helps
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
