Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/burned cutting board

Question
I mistakenly turned on the wrong burner on the electric stove at a friend's house and caused a sizeable charred area on a cutting board that had been sitting on the burner.
I offered to replace the board but it turns out this was made for her as a gift by her nephew, who now has cancer.
What would be the best way to repair this board?  I read a previous answer that said burned wood should be planed but I think this is relatively shallow charring - I pulled it off as soon as I smelled the smoke.
Thanks for your answer.  I enjoyed reading your advice to others.  Barb

Answer
Hi Barb
Nice to hear from you.
You were told correctly. In most cases burn marks will need to be planed out.
Very mild surface burn can sometimes be sanded out but those are the only 2 choices.
Thank you for the nice comments Barb, it makes helping others a treat.
Kindest Regards
Eileen
PS..any wood shop will plane this board or sand for a very small fee.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
