Question
I've been reading these q&a's as I prepare to refinish my bathroom cabinets.  What is the "poly" that is referred to as a finishing product and which is the best kind?  Sorry for my ignorance.  I'm new!

Answer
Hi Rachel
Nice to hear from you.
Poly is actually called polyurethane.SP?
I call it liquid plastic, although its probably incorrect.
Poly comes in oil based and water based.
It is a clear coat we apply to our cabinets or sometimes people use it on furniture.
It comes in gloss, semi gloss and satin sheen just like paint.
The water based poly does not turn yellow over the years as the oil based has a tendency to do.
What is the best Kind?..its just a matter of preference.
I like the Minwax products, but I live in a small town and do not have easy access to a wide range of different products.
Its a good choice for your bathroom cabinets.
Personally I would use the oil based in the bathroom, but its your choice.
Hope this helps
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
