Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Two different oak stains...

QuestionHello!
We recently purchased two townhouses and are converting them into one unit through the kitchens by going through the wall between the kitchens. Our problem arises because the oak cabinets in each unit do not match. One side has a dark stain and the other a light. I would like to sand down the lighter side and then place a darker, and hopefully matching stain on them. Is it even possible? I think it will be hard to match the darker stained side (unit). And if we can find a stain to match, then what? After you stain them do you apply a coat of polyurethane to shine them up, or is there a quicker way? HELP!!!
AnswerHi Jennifer
Nice to hear from you.
In order to restain either set of cabinets, the existing finish must be removed.
This must be done with paint stripper and lots of work, but it can be done.
Finding a matching stain will be easy. You can also mix two or three colors of stain to get the match you desire.
And going darker will be easier like you are thinking. Trying to get darker oak lighter can be hard.
Always apply a good top coat after staining. In this case the poly as you are thinking.
Jennifer this can be done. Just do a bit each day. That way its not such a daunting job.
Good Luck
