Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Can oak look sophisticated?

Question
we have a 18 year old house with huge kitchen that has golden oak cabinets. I
want to do a designer kitchen and add granite and fancy appliances, but I dont
see ANY designers using golden oak cabinets. What do you recommend to have
the cabinets mimic another "high-end" wood - should we paint or??? We could
afford to replace them but it seems wasteful since they are functional ( just a bit
ugly!)

Answer
Hi Barb
Nice to hear from you.
What a great question.
And now that I think about it, I never see designers using oak cabinets today.
Unfortunatley oak is oak and cannot be made to look like another wood unless you want to totally cover the cabinets in a colored laquer or paint.
If you go the laquer route, you will need a pro.
Painting can be done by anyone.
And it would be a shame to just replace them.
Good Luck and a great question

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
