Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/painting over trim

Question
I just bought a second-hand desk for my daughter.  It's ivory painted wood
with a thin gold trim around ornate edges and the drawer edges and near the
drawer pulls.  I'd love to make the trim silver instead of gold but don't want to
do anything too involved.  Can I just paint over the gold with silver oil paint?
And what's the best way to not make a mess of painting over very thin lines?

Answer
Hi Nancy
Nice to hear from you.
What a great idea.
And yes you can paint directly over the gold with the silver. Just make sure the surface is clean.
Perhaps a light wipe over the entire desk with a gentle degreaser in warm water.
The best way to avoid a mess making the lines is a very steady hand LOL..sorry theres no other way.
And if you do not have a brush called a liner, get one at the craft store along with the paint. Cannot do this job without a liner
And make sure there are no distractions.
Good Luck and a great question.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
