Question
Hi Eileen-I have been trying to paint some end tables that were wood. I have sanded them -primed them and then used two coats of an interior latex. I used a spray poly and they look horrible-they are blotchy and uneven looking-I have used a fine 0000 steel wool to try to smooth the surface -help-as I have invested alot of time in this project already-thanks

Answer
Hi Lori
Nice to hear from you.
Gosh I'm sorry this has happened Lori.
The mistake was made when you used the poly over the paint.
Don't know who told you to do this, but it should have been stressed that you use water based poly over water based paint.
And its just not necessary to do this at all.
I assume the poly was applied to make the surface more durable. Todays paint is durable without this.
Sorry to say the tables will need to be sanded off to get rid of the poly.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
