Question
Hi, I have an old oak roll top desk. I need to clean it up and put a new finish. I think it has an oil base finish now.
I'am going to leave the nicks etc. I have had it for over 45 yrs. and it was old when I got it. I use it every day.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Clay
Nice to hear from you.
My wish list has always had an oak roll top desk on it LOL, but I have never come accross one at auction I could afford.
They are pretty much indestructable but do get nicks and scratches that simply add to their character.
With yours I would first give a good cleaning with mineral spirits and a fine steel wool pad dipped in the spirits as a scrubber. Use lots of clean rags to dry as you go.
You will be amazed at the dirt this will remove.
Then a coat of low luster tung oil applied with a rag and your desk will look great.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
