Question
Is it practical/possible to use a router for laminate trimming, or would it be a better idea to purchase a laminate trimmer?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Yes, it is absolutely possible to use a router as a laminate trimmer. The main difference will be that the size of the base on a router will be bigger. The laminate trimmer's base is smaller, allowing you to get closer into the corner, if you're routing something like a kitchen countertop in place. Routing closer to the corner means you do less hand work with a file. But both machines will do essentially the same work.

You'll need a laminate trimmer bit. Those usually come with either a straight profile, or with a slight beveled profile. And both of those will have a bearing on the end of it, which glides over the vertical edge and allows for flush trimming. Don't buy the kind of trimmer bit (usually made of High Speed Steel) in which the bearing is formed right into the bit, with no bearing on the end. That sort of a guide will burn your work. Trust me, it's no fun to rout a countertop, and then notice that there are a few burns in places that the router bit my have lingered a little too long.

Make sure you keep that bearing well lubricated, as it tends to gum up with any adhesive that might be in it's way. It has to spin freely in order to work properly. They make a lubricant made especially for router bits, but I usually just give it a spritz of WD-40. But be careful with the WD-40, as it can dissolve the adhesive on your countertop, too. So spray the bit away from your work.

Good luck, I hope this helps. Feel free to write back with any other questions you might have after reading this.
