Question
I have recently moved into a home twice the size of my previous home and need some furniture to fill it.  I have the items but they all need slipcovered, painted, etc.  I am not an experienced sewer but I am creative and a quick learner and like to do things myself to save money.  I like the look of french shabby chic and slipcovers but they have to be custom-made not "Sure-Fit".  I also love good material but can't afford the expensive stuff.  I probably have 12 projects to conquer and need any advice you might have on slipcovering and increasing the fluffiness of a peice of furniture.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi,  there is no way that you can increase the size of furniture by slipcovering it.  That would require reupholstering.  The only way to increase the look of size would be to do so with stripes and colors.  Some colors make furniture look larger.  I disagree that it would be difficult to tackle slipcovering if you want he shabby chic look.  Try this,  measure each piece that is required as a straight lined piece, ample size,  then drape it over the arms or back, cushion, etc. to be slipcovered.  Mark it with chalk and then trim it.  Then staple the pieces together with a good quality hand stapler, rather than pinning it.  sew it together and remove the staples.  Doing it that way it is much easier than it appears and you say you are creative so should have no problem.  Furniture also looks bigger if you use different fabrics that have the same colors on one piece,  for example a stripe on arms flowers on the cushions,  plaid on the back,  at least 5 diferent paterns in the same color way.

I hope this helps.  Good luck and have fun.  Best wishes in your new home.
