Question
Hi again ,I have a question about getting rid of cigarette smoke odor from wooden furniture.  The 3 pieces I got from my in-laws smell like an ashtray.  Any way to "fix" this?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Again Alan
You can get rid of most of this odor, and time will do the rest.
Wash all unfinished areas with a mild household bleach solution. Its good for that moldy smell as well as cigarette smoke. Put about 1/2 cup in your scrub pail.
I'd try Murphys furniture soap on the finished areas.
It leaves a nice after smell too.
A bit of sunshine on the pieces while drying will help too, and finally after all that place Downy fabric softener sheets in any drawers if you have any.
Alan this seems to work well, but I often wonder if I am just too darn tired after all that work to notice the smell LOL
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
