Question

-------------------------
I'm sorry, I probably wasn't clear. It's more of an echo. The underside is drywalled, but I can see the nails, and it seems to be reinforced.34" wide, 3 nails across. I'm looking for a way to muffle the echoing of the kids walking up and down the stairs.

Question -
I have taken off the old carpeting on our staircase, and will be refinishing the wooden stairs. My question is: What would you advise I use to insulate against the hollow sound when you walk on them? I'll be leaving the carpeting off, once I redo them.

Answer -
I've dealt with "squeaky" stairs, but not sure on the "hollow sound."  Are the treads free-standing, i.e. no structure behind them for proper reinforcement, causing the hollow sound?   I've built over hundreds of stair or refinished with solid treads and have not experienced hollow.  I would conclude that there may not be proper backing or reinforcement under the treads, behind the risers.  May wish to check.

Answer
The only options I can think of are:
1.  Add insulation behind the stair drywall, or
2.  Use a carpet runner down the middle or walkway of the stair only, or
3.  Add reinforcement framing lumber under the treads.
Putting the carpet runner is sure to muffle.  But if that isn't the desire, perhaps entertaining 2 & 3?
