Question
Hi,  I was planning on refinshing my bathroom cabinets, but decided that would be too much work right now.  Can I clean them up and apply a coat of poly?

Answer
Hi Christina
Nice to hear from you.
You most definately can clean and apply a coat of poly.
Surface prep is the most important though.
Get a box of fine steel wool, and a box of TSP powder at the hardware.
Mix the TSP according to directions and using the steel wool as a scrubber, give the cabinets a real good scrub.
This will deglaze the surface.
When dry, apply the poly.
If you are real pressed for time, and it would be my choice even if I wasn't, apply 2 coats of low luster tung oil. I like the Circa brand.
Simply wipe it on with a rag.
Much easier than applying poly, and no drips.
Hope this helps and thanks for a great question.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
