Question
Hello

I am planning on moving a coffee table, looks like maybe made out of maple or some other heavy wood, to the outdoor side deck.  It has some over hang but when it rains hard, the water will be covering it for sure.   Is there any way to protect this wood from the rain as well as from the sun ( I live in Arizona..)

Thank you,  Gabe

Answer
Hi Gabe
Nice to hear from you.
Spar varnish is the best finish for outdoors, but no finish lasts too long when exposed to the elements.
So keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that maple does not do well outdoors...don't ask me why, its just my experience that says that.
The finish really deteriorates faster on maple, and it warps something awful.
Good luck and great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
