Question
Hello

I am planning on moving a coffee table, looks like maybe made out of maple or some other heavy wood, to the outdoor side deck.  It has some over hang but when it rains hard, the water will be covering it for sure.   Is there any way to protect this wood from the rain as well as from the sun ( I live in Arizona..)

Thank you,  Gabe

Answer
Gabe,

There is only one product that I'm aware of that will protect your table from water damage. It's spar varnish, which is used to protect wood on boats. One of the more popular brands is McCloskey, here is a link:

I am pretty sure this widely available, so you'll probably be able to locate it at one of the bigger hardware stores. If not there, a paint store should have it.

I know that according to their commercials on TV, Thompson's Waterseal says it protects wood and repels moisture. I've used it on decks, outdoor furniture, brick walkways and other outdoor things, but I feel like the spar varnish is the only true way to get absolute protection.

I am not sure about the UV protection this product has, I would ask about UV additives when you buy it, and see if there is something to mix into this, so that you get both moisture and UV protection. I live in Las Vegas, so I understand completely.

Good luck, I hope this helps.
