Subject: Don't want Digital Cable

Question
Hi-Thanks for volunteering.

I'm moving to a new location, and it looks like basic cable (which I now have) is not available, and I'm stuck with getting digital that I don't really want.

My choices are getting Direct TV through the telephone lines or Charter Digital Cable.  If I want to wire more than one TV (actually, I probably will want to wire 4 or 5 rooms), do I have to lease a digital box from the provider for each one?  Are there digital ready TVs?  I plan on living in this house for a long time, I'd hate to have to pay $5 a month for each digital box from the provider.  What are my options?

BTW, I also already have a couple TiVO's that I'll be using as well.

I'd appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Carl

Answer
You probably don't have much of a choice if basic or "analog cable" (non-digital) is being phased out in your area. There are digital ready TVs' available, but most are over 32", set by FCC mandate. The biggest thing to check for in purchasing a TV is to 1) make sure it is "digital ready" and not just "digital compatible" ( means you need a digital converter from cable comp.). If your cable company has service for already digital ready TV's you would be able to use the "slide card" for digital cable that is in front or on side of most sets. But i also believe that a new law passed that will " not allow " the cable companies to any longer charge for the " digital boxes " that they have been charging the consumer's for years. Your best bet would be to contact your local cable comp. and ask if their is a charge after the "primary" set. I do know that most sat. dish comp. will charge $5 for each add. room after the primary. I hope this will help, and don't hesitate to ask more questions in the future, if the need arises. Good Luck!
