Question
Dear Mr King,

I have to buy a new dvd player/VCR.  I can get a decent one for $50, but it has the following disclaimer:

The Consumer Alert message below is also applicable to this DVD/VCR due to its analog broadcast tuner.

CONSUMER ALERT: This TV has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-Only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products.

I currently have analog cable, but of course will eventually have to go digital.  There are units for $150 That do not have the above disclaimer.  Am I correct in assuming that the the more expensive units will allow me to get digital cable w/o renting a box from the cable company?  I appreciate any advice you can offer.  I don't want to pay triple the cost if its not going to make a difference.
Thanks,

Steve

Answer
The FCC is always setting dates for future laws and usually there is always a delay or extension granted for this "foreseeable" transition. In my opinion I would buy the lower price unit and roll the dice so to speak on needing a digital to analog converter in the future. With the newer technologies that we see arrive on a daily basis, the prices will drop as well the advancement of the products in the consumer electronic sector. If the FCC mandates that date to be set in stone, I would not hold my breath on it. Back to the units without the disclaimer, you would need to check box to see if it states there is a digital tuner or digital compatible source input already installed in unit. It may say "digital ready" on package which would mean there is some sort of digital input. I hope this has helped answer your question, and good luck.
