Experience Due to the arid climate here in Nevada, I grew up planting cacti and shrubs to design my landscapes. As years went on, I learned the different ways on taking care of these amazing cacti, especially how to propagate them.
Education/Credentials During the past few years, I have tried out many methods in growing cacti, especially when it comes to propagation. I learned the dangers of over-watering, and have researched that people often make common mistakes. That is why I joined to be part of AllExperts.
Hi Joan,
I have Polaskia Chichipe around 30 inches tall with 3 arms coming of the main stem, over the winter it seems to have withered and is discoloring. The main stem is spongy at the top and the 3 arms are dropping and are leeking clear fluid from the spines. Is there anything that can be done to save this plant???
Answer Hello Paul,
Overwatering. Overwatering. Overwatering. Overwatering. (Oops, I have just overwatered this answer :) This is the biggest myth ever. Cactus require alot of water. This is false, as they are succulents and can store up alot of water. However, too much water and they will root rot, a process where the roots grow fungi due to the continues moisture. Symptoms include wrinkled stems, discoloration, and arm weakness. Survival varies, and must take precautions to prevent this.
