Question

Unknown Cactus Plant
Hi,

What is the genus spacies of this cactus? This is my friends plant that she recieved from a hort class. It was a cutting and is growing very well.  This spring it will be two years old.  It bends torward the light from a near by window.  It gets turned about every two days.  We can't figure out what genus species of cacti it is.  Please if you could offer your help we would be very happy.

Thank you,
Justin

Answer
It is very hard to identify a cactus as  there are about 14,000 species in the family Cactacae.I don't know specifically what species it is, but judging by it's spines the Genus is either Mammalaria or Echinocerus. I would start there.  Your best bet is to got to one one the websites like Dave's Garden or the Garden Web and post your photo there. Someone there will be able to identify at least the Genus. There are also many cacti whose species are unidentified. If you have a Cactus and Succulent Society (I don't know where you are from)  you can send your photo to either the state or national group.

And there's always the library. I've looked in all the books I have here and can't find that specific plant. If I can figure out how to transfer your picture I can send it to Dave's Garden.

As for care, it needs to be in the window not just near the window and in winter don't water it as it is dormant.  Start watering again in March.

I will keep your question and photo and try to get it identified as well.  If you buy another cactus and really want to know the name be sure it's identified. Otherwise you will be going through this tearing your hair out experience I am having now!!

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.

Experience

I have learned by reading books, by trial and error and by consulting with folks with much more knowledge. I have primarily grown C&S for the last 20 years.
