Question

Saguaro
I purchased a large (about 17foot) saguaro from a local nursery here in Tucson about a year ago and had them plant it in my front yard.  Over the last month or so it is beginning to become discolored from the ground up on one side.  It is taking on a pinkish-orange color and I am worried it may be dying or suffering from some type of disease.  When I called the nursery they said it is probably because of the colder winter weather and not to worry (they also told me they are under new management and don't offer warranties).  Does this sound like a dying saguaro or am I over worrying?
Thanks

Answer
Is that area softer than the rest of the cactus feel weaker? That would tell me there's a problem, most likely rot which often travels up through the roots. In that case I'd call the local agricultural extension. Also, it seems to be a somewhat rapid onset so that's worrisome.

It's hard to tell from your picture cause it's a little blurry but as cactus age they develop what's called corking around their base and that's normal. It could be the beginning of that.

I know there are a lot of Saguaros in your area and I take a look at some of them for similarities/differences to yours and we could go from there. A picture of the other side would also be helpful.

Keep me posted.

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.
