Cactus/Scalp puncture from a large cactus

Question
I managed to get several punctures to the temple and the side of my head from a large cactus. I removed all visible spines, but I now have swelling and pain there. Is infection probable, or am I simply having a normal reaction to the truama of bruising and shallow punctures?

Answer
Dear Carol,

so sorry for the slow response. Several Possibilities. You may be having an allergic reaction to the cactus itself ( some have sap that can cause allergic reactions), some of the spines are imbedded in your scalp and can be causing the irritation and 3, you can be developing an infection.  Not knowing how large the spines were or the type of cactus I would check with your MD if you have redness, swelling, warmth at the  site and pain.

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.

Experience

I have learned by reading books, by trial and error and by consulting with folks with much more knowledge. I have primarily grown C&S for the last 20 years.
