Cactus/Saguaro slice planting

Question
Hi Marueen,
I have a cut-up baja saguaro plant and am wanting to plant the top "crown" which is about 2 feet high. It has been sitting out now for 2 weeks and is starting to "green over" and heal apparently. Should I plant only when the slice has completely "healed over with new tough skin"? Maybe in about 3-4 weeks after it was cut?

Answer
Yes, wait until it is completely calloused, however long that takes.  You can root it directly in the ground or in a pot.  I recommend a pot as it needs some shade while rooting and you can move it if you need to. I'd leave it  there for 6mo. to a year and transplant where you want it to be.  Give it some sun protection initially when you do that.

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.

Experience

I have learned by reading books, by trial and error and by consulting with folks with much more knowledge. I have primarily grown C&S for the last 20 years.
