Question
have a Saguaro cactus that is about 30 ft. tall. My problem is it is leaning very bad and I am afraid it is going to fall over. It has 4 very large arms, 2 of which are on the side it is leaning toward. How can I straighten it out. I live in Tucson.
Thanks Colin Germain

Answer
This isn't a problem you can take care of yourself.  The cactus is just too large and it is too dangerous.

The three main causes for your saguaro cactus to lean are bacterial nercosis at the base, balance is off because of heavy limbs or there is a water source near you which is loosening the soil.

Most saguaro cacti less than 25 ft tall can be straightened manually but larger saguaros with several arms must be straightened by either a cradle truck or by crane. The Cactus and Succulent Society of Tucson can recommend a certified cactus horticulturist who can help you.  Their # is 520-256-2447.  Sticky Situation Desert Growers in Tucson (520-256-2447) recommended David Hand at Old Pueblo Cactus. I would call them and ask for his number if CSST can't help.

You may be able to save the cactus but you will need the help of an expert with a cradle.

I suggest you do it ASAP as if it topples it can cause damage and/or hurt anyone near it.

If you have trouble getting someone through theses sources let me know, and let me know how it turns out.

good luck,

Maureen

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.

Experience

I have learned by reading books, by trial and error and by consulting with folks with much more knowledge. I have primarily grown C&S for the last 20 years.
