Question

Unknown blooming Cactu
I visited a new friend and they have this plant that blooms constantly.  They tell me it is from the Cacti family.  They gave me a slip to propigate.  They have no idea of the identity of this plant.  Could you help me find out the identification.  I also need to know how to propigate this plant.  The plant has soft leaves and a woody type stem with spines all the way up the plant.
Any help from you will be especially appreciated.

Answer
It is a Euphorbia Milli.  Looks like a hybrid with larger flowers and leaves.  It isn't a cactus, it is a succulent.  Plant it in 1/2 sterilized soil and 1/2 sand (coarse) or perlite.  Moisten the medium slightly and if the base of your cutting has calloused plant it far enough in the soil (in a small pot) so that it stands up.  Euphorbias can take a long time to root but this is one of the hardier ones.  Give it about  a teaspoon of water about once a week.  You will know it has rooted by new growth at the top.

Be careful of the white, milky substance that leaks out when you cut it.  It can be irritating to the skin.  Wear  gloves

You need to be patient.  Some succulents can have spines but not the clustered spines of cacti.

Good luck.

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.

Experience

I have learned by reading books, by trial and error and by consulting with folks with much more knowledge. I have primarily grown C&S for the last 20 years.
