Question

Cactus with yellow arm
The arms on my cactus are all turning yellow to black. I have removed the dried up ones but it keeps getting worse. I moved the plant to a sunnier place. Help- also not sure what type of cactus it is.

Answer
Dear Laurie,

What is happening with the mother plant?  Is it yellowing? Getting mushy?  The arms won't yellow like that unless the mother plant has something wrong with it.  Can you give me more details and also a better photo of the mother plant top to bottom.  Also, is is a new development? If you can send me a close up of the spines I may be able to tell you what kind of plant it is.  When the arms turn black are they dry or mushy/soft?

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding the care and propagation of cactus and succulents and would actually group these together as folks often mistake one for the other and often their care is quite different. I also have a cold hardy cactus and succulent garden that has been quite successful. The subject in regard to classification of type is enormous and I wouldn't be able to answer all questions by any means. It is really IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO if at all possible and LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM, especially in terms of climate.
