Cactus/Barrel cactus cutting

Question
I have a large golden barrel that has lots of "babies" both around the base and on the sides. Can I cut with care the ones on the sides and plant them in soil and will they start roots?

Answer
Ron,

I really don't know the answer to that question because I have never tried it. Barrel cactus are virtually impossible to root from a cutting, but not impossible. I would say give it a try with one or two of the pups. Make sure to use very porous soil and keep them out of direct sunlight. Water only when the soil is dry. You might also try some gel rooting hormone (available at most nurseries). Good Luck, I hope it works!

Sincerely,

Greg
