Question
How do cacti survive in the desert?

Answer
Tom,

It is their design. Low surface area, ability to store water, roots just below the surface to collect even the smallest amount of rain, spines to protect it and shade it, and stomata that only open at night to conserve water. All of those factors are the reasons why cacti can survive such harsh conditions.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
