Cactus/Cactus Replant

Question
Hello,

I have a large cactus that has been in a small pot for years.  It is starting to tip over now and the base of the cactus is browning a bit.  How should I re plant it in a bigger pot and what type of soil should I use?  I am concerned with damaging the roots when re-planting as well/

Thank you,
Greg

Answer
Greg,

The browning may be normal. Most cacti will produce a woody trunk, much like a tree as they age. If you replant, use a "cactus mix" soil. It is available at most nurseries (home depot, etc). Pick a pot that is nearly double the diameter of the current one. Being root bound is not a problem for most cacti, but a larger pot will help keep it from falling over. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
