Cactus/Cactus propogation

Question
I am trying to find out how to propogate from seed a Devils-claw cactus.  I think the scientific name is: Sclerocactus parviflorus var. intermedius, based on some web searches I have done.  A friend of mine has a large seed pod that she cannot even open, and we wondered if it should be soaked in water, cold stratified, etc...  I also noticed on some web sites, that seed germination may not be possible, and they only propogate by grafting.  Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

There is a company that I buy a lot of seed from (I am sorry, my forte' is large cacti) that sells a whole lot of Sclerocactus parviflorus. Their website is http://www.mesagarden.com/ and Steven will probably know the answer to your question. His email is cactus@swcp.com

If I had to guess based on your description is that the seed must be scarified. I have had to do this with many Acacia seeds. Scratch the seed with something sharp...please be careful. Soak it in some water until the seed noticeably swells. Then plant. However, check with Steven first. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
