Cactus/Christmas Cactus Removal

Question
I have a HUGE 15-year-old Christmas cactus - over 6 feet tall and quite rotund - that I want to remove. I hired a gardener who lasted about an hour and declared that it's too dangerous of a plant. Please help! How do I get rid of an enormous Christmas Cactus?

Thanks so much for your help, your time and your consideration.

Answer
Dear Carolyn,

Well, I must say that even the meanest cactus (like an Opuntia) can be removed. I don't think that you have a Christmas Cactus, as those are quite easily removed and don't have ferocious spines.

I'd cover myself adequately and wade into the plant - remember that shears and such tools can be enormously helpful. Cut a little at a time until you have an area to work - then the removal should go more quickly.

If possible, send me a picture of what you have to remove to:

Thank you, Carolyn.
