My Golden star cactus appears to be dying at the root. The upper parts of it, appear to be alive.  I have removed the dead parts. Some parts have a small string that appears to be part of the roots and it does not look damaged. But I am not sure how to replant a cactus or if replanting is even an option. I live in the North East, should I be doing anything  special for my cacti during the winter months? I have had this plant for two years now and this is the first time I have an issue with it. I have never seen it bloom, and I changed its pot this summer. I used regular potting soil,I don't know how to take care of cacti. What can I do?

You may be able to re-root your plant, but you'll need to let it dry out (now that you've removed the rotted areas) for at least 3 weeks. First of all, you'll need "cactus mix" type soil. Regular potting soil retains too much water, which may be why it rotted.

After you let it heal, plant it about 1 inch into the soil and water, but do not water again until the soil is dry. If it roots, it may take a couple of months. Always let the soil dry out between waterings. Hope this helps.
