Cactus/Problem with my cactus

Question
I have many large cactuc planted around our guest houses. We have both the Curly and the Spineless type.  They have both developed a creamy white crust on them and look like they don't feel well.  What do you think.  I appreciate you being available for people like myself, who know little but try hard.  Beth

Answer
Dear Beth,

It sounds like Cochineal scale, which is a bug that loves prickly pear. Here is a website that may help you identify and treat it:

http://www.arizonacactussales.com/tips/cochineal.htm

If that doesn't look what your up against, try here instead: http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/entomology/sap.html

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
