Cactus/Rotting moon cactus

Question
Dear Greg

The base of my yellow moon cactus has rotted. To stop the rot from spreading, I have sliced off the rotten parts. Now, only about 1.5 inch of unaffected stem remains. The grafted top is perfectly fine. Can I still repot the cactus after the cut surface has dried and healed? Is the remaining stem too short to keep the grated top alive?

Appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Liz

Answer
Dear Liz,

That may be too short.  You can try to bury all but 1/2 inch of the "root stock" in some new soil after you let it dry (heal) for a week or two. Water only when the soil is dry and it may re-root but it could take a month or so to do so. I have read however that these cacti should be regrafted onto a Trichocereus to eliminate the issue you are having. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
