Cactus/Sagauro Tops

Question
I had a Saguaro fall as a result of high wind and storms, multi arm (14) and I had cut the tops that were not damaged. I was told that I could replant them. I woul like to ask what is the proper way to prep them and how to spur root growth? I have cut them even on the bottoms and stood them up on the surface of the dirt ground and watered from the top down for the last 4 months, the bottoms have started to callus over. What can I do to get the roots started?

Answer
Dear Bill,

Once the cut areas have callused over completely, plant them in soil mixed with about 50% sand about 4 to 6 inches deep. If they root at all, it will take a very long time. Cacti that thick are very hard to root, but it is possible. There are rooting hormone powders and gels that may help, although I don't use them myself so I am unaware of the brand names but they should be available at your local nursery. Make sure to water only when the soil is dry if they are in a pot, if they are in the ground, rain water should be sufficient.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
