Cactus/Saguaro Spines Turning Black

Question
I have a 3 saguaro's that the spines are turning black. A couple of them are turning black in the mid sections while another is turning black on the top. The plants are otherwise in very good condition. I have 2 more in the front yard without this problem. If it is a problem. Is this normal?

Answer
Rick,

If there is nothing foreign on them, then they are fine. If there is, please send me a photo to greg8365@hotmail.com and I will try to diagnose the problem. Saguaro spines will change color over time. Also, think of the spines like your fingernails, the part that you see isn't really alive. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
