Question
I have a large cactus, it is about eight feet.  I got it from a friend who had it for 15 years.  I am not sure about the type. In the middle part there is a large dry light brown spot and it is getting larger.  The cactus is in a small bowl and was never re-planted.  Should I re-plant it in a bigger space?  What can I do with the brown spots?   Thank you, J

Replanting if there is something wrong can make it worse because the plant will go into shock. Is your plant a singe stem or many? If you cut it does white sap come out? Chances are your plant was damaged somehow. If the spot continues to grow, your only option will be to cut the stem about 6 inches below the spot. If there is a white sap, it is a Euphorbia and not a cactus. The white sap is toxic, so do not get it on you. Make the cut at an angle, so water can not collect there. If it is healthy, it should branch from the cut area. Hope this helps.
