Cactus/Yucca Plant

Question
Hi Greg,
I have an indoor Yucca, and I am very worried about it because it looks sick.  I've only had it for about 6 weeks, and I water it once a week.  The plant has 2 stalks, and the leaves have developed white and brown spots/bumps all over them.  Also the tips of some of the leaves are turning brown.
What should I do?  Can I revive my Yucca?
Thanks for your help!
Best,
Brooke

Answer
Brooke,

Depending on the type of Yucca, watering once a week is probably too much especially for an indoor plant. Make sure the soil is dry to the touch to at least an inch deep before you water.

Must Yuccas are drought tolerant and can survive for an extended time without water. Also, try prying one of the "bumps" off. If it comes off in your hand, it may be a "scale" or "mealy bug" infestation. If that is what it is, there are remedies at your local nursery or garden center.

You can also try "tide water". Mix a little Tide deteregent in some water and spray it lightly on the affected leaves. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
