Cactus/black tip on my cactus

Question
I got a cactus a couple years ago, and it was doing fine. I'm not sure what kind it is. Recently the tip lightened and it started getting a black squishy spot. Should I cut the top off? Or is there a different way to heal it? Please help me, I really don't want my cactus to die!

Answer
April,

I am sorry for the delay in answering you, have had some computer issues that are now resolved. Yes, you should cut the top off and about an additional inch or 2. Unfortunately if you don't get rid of the rotted area, it may affect the whole plant. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
