Cactus/cactus bite

Question
Today a small cactus fell on my foot, at first it was fine but a few hours later it started burning and I looked at my foot and their was a thorn stuck in my toe. After removing the thorn it feels as if my toes are broken and they are red, swollen, and burn. Are you sure cactuses are not poisinous?

Answer
Dear Rosanna,

First I must apologize for the delay in my answer. I have been out of town and not able to access my email.

No, cactus are not poisonous with regards to their spines. However, having been stuck countless times myself, I have had the same symptoms. I would recommend that if you have not had a tetanus shot in a while, I would ask your doctor. Puncture wounds like that caused by a cactus spine can carry that bacteria. Better safe than sorry.

Again, I apologize for the delay in my answer.

Sincerely,

Greg
