Cactus/cactus rot

Question
My pricky pear cactus has what appear to be spots of black rot at the ends of some of the ears. Only a few clusters have this condition. Any ideas?

Answer
Dear Stormy,

If your plant is outside, it could be one of two things. It could be frost damage (depending on where you live) or it could be marks left by a sucking insect. Check out this webpage: http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/entomology/sap.html

The very first bug is the one I am referring to. There isn't a whole lot you can do if your plant is in the ground other than to have an exterminator spray outside. If the spots are from a bug, as long as it isn't infested with them, the plant will be fine. Frost damage will also heal. Hopefully this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
