Question
i have a old man type cactus plant it is 6 inches tall and the bottom 2 inches look like it is routten the in side is all gooey yes it did fall over . the route ball is soft .
how can i save it .

Answer
Dear rswrangler,

If it is only 6" tall and it has visibly rotted the bottom 2", Chances are there is not enough plant left to replant. Just to be sure, cut the remaining 4" section in half. If there is any dark spots (brown or black) inside, then you will need to purchase a new plant.

If there are no dark spots, let the cut area heal for at least 2 weeks. Then plant in about 2/3's sand to 1/3 soil about 1" deep. Water only when the soil is dry. If it roots, it will take a month or so. You will know if it takes root by new growth. Just be aware that most old man type cacti do not root from cuttings as easily as other cacti. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
