I "acquired" a couple pieces of a Christmas Cactus to root.  I just put the cut ends in a cup with about 1-1/2" of water and left them sitting on my desk.  About 1-1/2 weeks later they had small white roots.

I have raised christmas cactus for a long time and grew new plants from cuttings, it is easy to do,just take a few segments from a plant(about 2 inches high)place cuttings in a small amount of water in a small glass untill roots appear then plantin a good potting soil. these plants are easy to raise and will bloom around christmas time.Good Luck.
