Cactus/golden barrel cactus

Question
QUESTION: All four of my golden barrels put out puppies last summer.  Some of these puppies have grown quite large and seem to be sucking the life from the parent cactus.  Should these puppies by cut off and replanted? Will the parent cactus recover or will I have to consider them a loss?  What will be the best choice to make?
Judy

ANSWER: Judy,

There must be a problem with the main plant, and it is not the pups. Usually barrel cactus can't be cut and replanted (at least I have had no luck with it). Chances are it is something else like watering or even heat (if your in the Phoenix area), as we had a very hot summer. If possible, send me a photo to greg8365@hotmail.com and I will hopefully be able to give you a better answer.

Sincerely,

Greg

QUESTION: Greg,  Thank you for your prompt response regarding my golden barrel cacti.  I live in Lake Havasu City, AZ and our rain fall is much less than the Phoenix area.  Your answer mentioning the hot summer this year makes since and we will start a once a month watering schedule next summer.  We do cover our golden barrels with sun screen fabric for the 3 hottest months but part of the problem may be that they are on a steep incline facing west and watering can be difficult.  If you think this extra watering may help please let me know.  Thanks again,  Judy

Answer
Judy,

Yes, in your instance, extra water will help. I water my cactus garden with a lawn sprinkler. This waters the surface of the soil (where most of the cactus roots are) and reduces the chance of over watering them. Hope this helps and good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
