Answer
Dear Callum,

Sounds to me like you have a Opuntia or "prickley pear" cactus. The best way to transplant one is to wrap it in an old piece of carpet, big enough to go all the way around the plant (carpet side towards the plant, backing out). Secure it with some masking tape or string and then lay the plant on its side.

Remove the plant from its pot and prepare the new pot. Pick the plant up using the carpet and the root ball. Plant as normal. Remove the carpet carefully and you'll be done. Hope this helps! Good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
