Cactus/small cactus growing sideways white sprouts

Question
My daughter got a free little cactus plant at the county fair this summer. It's doing just fine, but there are 3 white sprouts growing sideways out of the top. Just wondering what and why this is happening? Thanks!

Answer
Lisa,

Chances are they are branches, but because cactus require very bright light, they be growing that way because of a lack of light. Do not put it in direct sun, or the plant will sunburn. A cactus will need at least 15 hours of bright light per day if grown indoors. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
