Cactus/Over-tall cactus

Question
Five years ago I bought this little guy, about 3" high, at the 99 Cent Store.  I don't know his breed, but now he is about 5" in diameter divided into four "wings" (pricklies along the outside of his wings) and about 8' tall with one weak spot about 4' up.  He is deep green and shiny. He just sprouted his first little "arm" up toward the top.  He is beautiful, but he has outgrown my apartment patio.  If I cut him in half, will either or both halves survive or should I just put him up for adoption.
Thanks - The Cactus Amateur

Answer
Dear Michelle,

Please send me a picture of your plant to gregandkat@msn.com. The reason is, that if it is a Euphorbia, rather than a cactus, then it will take a different process to take a cutting. Based on your description, it could be either a cactus or a Euphorbia.

Thanks,

Greg
