Question
I planted 5 prickly pears (produces delicious fruit with green skins) and was ecstaitc to see it actually growing (in Zimbabwe). But the 1 plant has white spots (sort of like a liquid) on it. what is this? how can I get rid of it?

Answer
Chantelle,

Chance are it is Cochineal insect. However, without actually seeing it, it is hard to say. Below is a link with a lot of info about Cochineal (including what is used to control it). Generally, the most effective way is to spray it of with a hose, or use a natural predator like the parasitic wasp. Hope this helps.
