Crankshaft position sensor. At first, the sensor had a crack in the coil of wire around the magnetic pickup. After the car heated up and the sensor got hot, it would open the crack and create an open circuit in the sensor. The waveform would stop being sent. Once the car sat and cooled....coil would cool and sensor would work again. After doign this over and over it has finally given out all together. This is common with crankshaft position sensors and camshaft position sensors.

most probable cause is the crank sensor if a code po335 is stored in the ecm crank sensor is located above the oil filter.

I just wanted to thank you all for your posts - thank you! I have a 99 Catera with less than 40k miles but it kept inexplicably having engine problems that would come and go. I just got the crankshaft position sensor fixed and it's already driving so much better! Before reading this forum I was planning to replace the timing belt (as recommended by the mechanic) for more than three times the price. Thanks again to everyone and please, keep up the good work!
